In conjunction with the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, Canadian Tire Centre announced today that the venue will host the annual Capital Hoops Classic on Friday, Feb. 2. The event will feature two games – a women’s matchup between the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens at 6 p.m., followed by a men’s contest between the same schools at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $10 and will go on sale on Thursday, Nov. 23, at 10 a.m.
Since its debut in 2007, the Capital Hoops Classic has played host to some of the highest recorded attendance figures in U SPORTS history. Last season the Capital Hoops Classic saw 10,030 fans take in the action, the third consecutive year that over 10,000 fans have attended the event.
The University of Ottawa women’s team has several new faces this season and has been led thus far by a group of freshman. Gatineau, Que. native Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu leads the charge for the Gee-Gees averaging 12.0 points per game, while first year point guard Maia Timmons is averaging 9.2 points per game through the Gee-Gee’s first five regular season contests. Following last season’s run to the OUA title and a bronze medal at the 2017 U SPORTS Final 8 Tournament, the Raven’s women’s program has built on its recent success with a strong start to the 2017-18 campaign. Carleton will rely on its senior leadership core of All-Canadian forward Heather Lindsay along with OUA All-Stars Catherine Traer and Elizabeth Leblanc as they look to get back to the national tournament for the second consecutive season.
The Gee-Gees men’s basketball team has started the season ranked in each of the first three top 10 national polls of the year and are led by reigning OUA All-Star Jean Emmanuel Pierre-Charles and his team-leading 13.8 points per game. Carleton captured its seventh consecutive U SPORTS championship last season and will look to build on its 9-2 overall record against Ottawa at the Capital Hoops Classic. The Ravens have held the No. 1 position in the top 10 rankings through the first three polls of the 2017-18 season and look to be a strong contender for both the conference and national title once again this year.
